Known size effects of technologically important material properties still stimulate search for effective fabrication processes of nanosized materials and structures. At Fraunhofer IZM galvanic deposition has been used to produce submicrometer metal structures on nano-porous polymer templates. Wires and wire-decorated surfaces are currently under evaluation for the development of new microelectronic packaging technologies as well as applications in life sciences. First results indicate that gold "nano-lawn" can be attractive in microsystem technology for the generation of electrical interconnects, but also in analytical chemistry, cell biology and derived fields. Theoretical considerations will be discussed together with original work on metallic nanostructures and their applications.
