Dynamic polarization holography in bacteriorhodopsin (BR) films is one of the most promising methods for real-time optical processing. At polarization holography recording, light intensity is not modulated in space and only the polarization state is modulated. Dynamic polarization holography properties of BR films are used for optical-controlled light polarization modulator. It is shown that control can be performed by choosing both the recording laser beam intensities and wavelength of the independent laser beam.

Also the application of the polarization holography technique for exploring light-dark adaptation and light intensity effect on the photocycle kinetics in BR is presented in this report. It is shown that comparison of the experimental dependence of the relation between diffraction efficiencies of the intensity and polarization gratings on the recording intensity with the calculated one is a very sensitive technique to study the intensity-dependent recovery (delay) time not only in BR but in other biological photoreceptors.

It is indicated that the light adaptation process in BR depends on the irradiation polarization. Adaptation by circular polarized irradiation is more efficient. A molecular dichroism of the BR dark-adapted form with 13-cis-retinal has been estimated.
